Long-Term Radioactive Waste Management in the Netherlands: Seeking Guidance for Decision-Making

Abstract The Netherlands pursues a ‘dual strategy’—national and international—with regard to the management of radioactive waste spent fuel. On national level an above-ground facility was built in 1990s store for period at least 100 years. By around year 2130 geological disposal is envisaged be operational. also international strategy, which leaves possibility open collaboration with other European Union Member States establish shared facility. Currently, country’s policy lacks concrete step-by-step decision-making process implement above dual strategy. This chapter identifies several challenges that need addressed, such as clarifying principles retrievability reversibility, setting up criteria reserve potential search locations facility, developing long-term, integral, participatory knowledge agenda, strengthening landscape enjoys public political support.
